About Farmhouse Modern

Many of us struggle with competing realities when it comes to home design. While we are drawn to true modern design for it’s intellectual rigor and courage, we are tied to other realities. We like comfortable, old houses. We like houses that still look great even when they are not spotless and uncluttered. We have a certain nostalgia for calmer, simpler forms and spaces.

Farmhouse Modern is not a prescriptive architectural style. It does not say “you should love this design” or “you should want to live this way otherwise you are intellectually lazy or just plain out of it.”

Farmhouse Modern is the annunciation of a grassroots movement. Real people are choosing this style. Real architects are designing in this style. And these houses are appreciated. In my hometown, when a Farmhouse Modern - style building comes on the market, it is generally sold in a few days.

This site is dedicated to helping people define what Farmhouse Modern means to them. It is picture-heavy. We (try to) stay away from preaching and stick to observing. The intended audience is not academic, instead it is for real people, owners, designers, architects and builders who love the cross between the familiar and the new and are looking for images and ideas to help them realize their personal vision.

The content focuses on Houses, Architects, Products and increasingly Green Design. Not only is Green Design morally compelling, some of the most interesting new solutions are emerging from the difficult challenge of making a working, beautiful home energy efficient and healthy.

Farmhouse Modern is a labor of love, despite the (too many) ads, it is not yet possible for us to generate income beyond the basic cost to run the site. Please forgive the commercial intrusions.
