I am working on a remodel and trying to shoe-horn in a 1/2 bathroom. For the umpteenth time, I am trying to figure out the minimum and desired dimensions. To save myself time in the future, and in the spirit of sharing, I thought that I would share the results of my efforts.
There are loads of places to find “rules” for bathroom clearance dimensions. The first and best place to start is your local building codes. Second is Architectural Graphic Standards. AGS recomends the following:
- Centerline of Toilet to a wall:
- 15″ min. 22″ liberal
- Front of the Toilet to a fixture (sink):
- w=18″ f=18″ min. w=36″ f=24″ liberal
- Center line of a sink to a wall:
- 15″ min. 22″ liberal
- Center line of a sink to a fixture:
- 12″ min. 18″ liberal
Also, the door should swing in if possible, if not possible a pocket door is second choice, an outswing door is third. If the door swings in, you need to create 18″ of clearance minimum between the door and any fixtures.
A 2′6″ door is the smallest desirable, but a 2′4″ door is OK.
So here are the three options that I am considering:
With any of these consider using a small pedestal sink or a “furniture-type” mini vanity. Also, consider lowering the ceiling height so that the room feels correctly proportioned.
Left: Stone Forest
Center: Stone Forest Flat Back Copper Sink
Right: Lacava Spring Vanity
