Bosworth Hoedemaker: Seattle’s 2nd Home Architects

May 3rd, 2008 · No Comments

I found Bosworth Hoedemaker through their book, “Building With Light in the Pacific Northwest.” I was looking for Christmas presents for my brothers and their wives, who are all architectural fans although generally in enthusiastic disagreement about which architects are “Great” and which are “Criminals.” The work described in the book appealed to me for a few reasons. First, they display the Seattle architect’s typical love affair with natural light, natural material and texture.

Second, they do not shy away from building forms that look comfortable and not toward the historical. But what finally caught me was the balance that they keep between academic theories and usable space where neither seems to suffer much for the tug-of-war. Too often, the built work of an academic architect disappoints as a built object or the architect who produces beautiful buildings cannot describe how they did so.

The houses span a variety of styles from log-cabin to country manor, but all of them contain ideas and vignettes that sit among my favorite.

Bosworth Hoedemaker in their own words:

Bosworth Hoedemaker, LLC specializes in the design of finely-crafted custom houses in the Pacific Northwest, California and Mexico. We are dedicated to meaningful and timeless design, achieved through close interaction with clients and rigorous attention to detail. Relationships of building to landscape, natural light to interior volume and program to plan are essential to the realization of efficient and harmonious spaces.
