The $20k house Phase III is a project created by the Rural Studio at Auburn University.
The Rural Studio, created by Samuel Mockbee & D.K. Ruth, is a program that focuses on affordability in creating architectural solutions for local families. The $20K project is located in Hale County, AL and aims to complete a well-designed house for $20,000.
The $20k project was designed in response to a federal loan program available to very low income families where they can borrow up to $20,000 for home repair of construction. This approach focuses on ease of erection and low-cost materials.
The result is a home that not only satisfied basic shelter needs, but does so with design flair. There is a fun and comprehensive blog detailing the project available here.
The details are a little unclear, but it looks like the complete house, with two homes connected by a “dog-trot”, ended up costing more than the target $20k and inolved the donated labor of 40 or so people.
This project was found on ShantyWorld.
