Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects

April 24th, 2008 · No Comments

In the past week or so we posted two projects from Seattle architects Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects. They are:

Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects began with Jim Olson in the late 60’s. According to their website:

Jim Olson started the firm based on some simple ideas: that buildings can serve as a bridge between nature, culture and people, and that inspiring surroundings have a positive effect on people’s lives.

With the addition of Rick Sundberg in 1975, the firm began designing modern civic buildings. The final two “masthead” partners, Scott Allen and Tom Kundig helped the firm gain a national reputation. In their monograph, Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects: Architecture and Craft, they mention the misty, contemplative atmosphere and the light of the Pacific Northwest as a strong influence on their work. From the images in the book, and their website, this appears true.

My impression is that they have an unusual sense of material quality and an ability to sculpt light that distinguishes their work. Very little of their work that is publicly available fits neatly into the “Farmhouse Modern” aesthetic, but the “Brain” studio, and the “Chicken Point Cabin” so caught my eye that I am including them on the Farmhouse Modern site. enjoy the following images, and don’t forget to check out their site and take a look at their books.
