Crossing 5th Park Ave. with the family on Thanksgiving vacation, I was two of these little cabins built on the median. I was so surprised and delighted to see these that I made the kids stop in the middle of crossing so I could take this picture with my phone.
I found more information about them and this terrific picture on http://odonnell.lohudblogs.com/2007/11/14/tourist-cabins-on-park-avenue/.
The installation was created by a professor of sculpture at Purchase College.

More from the New York Times available here.
The median is, of course, part of one of the best-known public spaces in the city. It sits directly across from Mies van der Rohe’s Seagram Building and only a few feet from Gordon Bunshaft’s Lever House.

What a great post! Um, but that’s Park Avenue, not 5th…..
I’m enjoying your blog very much. Keep up the great work.
