Poking around the web looking for modern farmhouses, I came across the Barn Hill Barn House website. The site chronicles the process of converting a 19th century barn into a modernist home for six, complete with pictures of the barn (old and new), videos, architectural drawings and narrative. It has been updated once or twice a week since March of 2006.
The project encompassed taking down a broken-down barn in Maine, moving it to Massachusetts, and building a home out of its “bones.”
What’s unique and wonderful about the Bare Hill Barn House website is that it chronicles every step - you can see architect’s drawings, read the musings from the author on what he likes/doesn’t like about the drawings, then see new drawings as they’re updated. You can watch a video of raising the frame.
It looks as though the family wants to be in the house by Thanksgiving. Here’s the house in its present state. The family is working with Jasonoah Design, R.B. Haworth & Sons and Early New England Restorations on the project.
